Cheapest Way to Change the Look of your Space

SCENARIO: Your new condo has just been turned over to you, the problem is, it is a cookie cutter copy of the units above and below you with plain beige boring walls!  You have exhausted your finances in paying the lumpsum but you want to give your space character and make it different from the other units. What do you do?  Find out here.

Well the answer is simple, PAINT! It is the cheapest way to change the look and feel of a space. Color can set the mood of the room without breaking the bank. You can even save more if you do it yourself. Make it a weekend project and instantly see the difference.

The following are some before and after photos of projects I completed using color and different techniques I used to enhance the feel of the room.

PROJECT SITE: The Grove by Rockwell, C5

Tropical Lush. If you are afraid of changing the entire color of the room, a FEATURE WALL is good idea.  Painting one wall a different color can make a big difference.  In this room, the wall is painted in a gorgeous green color, you can immediately see the big difference.  It is easy to imagine that one can be in a lush tropical jungle or perhaps a hotel room in Copacabana.

PROJECT SITE: 8 Forbestown Road, BGC

Royal Blue Suite. If you are more adventurous and bold, you can PAINT ALL THE WALLS.  In this project a deep rich blue was chosen.  The client owns a popular beach resort in Batangas and blue is her favourite color.  This rich color enveloping the room gives the master suite a sense of luxury yet still exudes a feeling of serenity and calm.  A perfect space to get away from the busy city outside

Here is the other bedroom of the project.  Notice the amazing golf course and Makati skyline views but the room is rather drab and ordinary with plain color walls.

A feature color wall is done here in a medium grey color to offset the beige tones of the room.  It also makes the perfect background for the client's wall art.  The color gray can match any modern interior and it is considered a neutral color.  If you are not as daring or bold then this color is perfect for you.

PROJECT SITE: Mandarin Mansion, Binondo

COLOR COMBINATION.  Here the walls are painted in two different colours, the reason for this is the client requested for a deep blood red for the headboard wall so a complimentary color was chosen for the other walls, which is gray.  In Chinese culture, red is a very lucky and auspicious but because red is such a strong color to use in a space especially the bedroom it is advisable to tone it down by using darker and complimentary colors, to make the space inviting not imposing.  Notice how the beige padded headboard helps tone the red color down as well.

PROJECT SITE: Gilmore Garden Square, San Juan

Fit for a Queen.  This condominium unit is owned by our representative to the Miss Universe contest who broke the country's dry spell and started our winning streak in the coming years!  She has a bubbly and youthful personality, so I proposed a unique and fun ceiling treatment for the living area.    The ceiling design is an ode to the universe, the round shapes representing the planets.  She immediately loved the idea.  Initially the circular coves were just painted white, but I decided to paint the inside a different color to give it more character.  The color orange was chosen since it is a  vibrant and lively color.  The ceiling turns into a fiery orange when the lights are turned on making the COLORED COVES a conversation piece.

OTHER COLOR TECHNIQUES, You guys can use in your space are...

Please note that the following photos are taken from different sites.

  • STRIPES.  This technique may require a professional painter to execute to get the right spacing for each stripe.  A stripes in a bold color can give instant glam to a room.

  • MULTICOLORED WALLS. This is not for the faint of heart but if properly executed can turn a boring space into something truly unique.  The room below can easily be done using a painters tape and different cans of paint.  The hard part here is choosing the different colors to match but in this room, the owner took cue from the coloured console to pick the colors for his walls.

Remember guys COLOR is your friend.  Be bold, be experimental, break out from the mold.  Your space should reflect your personality and style.  Do not follow trends, because they change every season so unless you have a bottomless cache of wealth and you get tired of the same look all the time then do so.  Otherwise, your space should reflect your style and personality and a properly designed space should last you a lifetime.
